I need information on metal canning

Hi,
Do you have any information on tin canning? I would like to can my food on tins rather than glass. Please let me know if you have any information on that.

Thanks

Answer:

I have not canned anything but dry foods in metal cans.

The equipment for sealing metal cans is quite expensive so I don't know that it would be economical for an individual. If you have a group of people who would like to chip in on a canner it would make more sense.

I did a search and found this source for both cans and can sealers.

House of Cans

You could also check with a local LDS Church. They may have more information about canning wet products for you.

When I want to dry can anything they will loan me the sealing machine at no charge. They also sell cans, lids, dry bulk foods and other supplies you may need. In some areas they have a cannery set up where you can do your canning right in their facility.

The people there are extremely helpful and friendly even though I am not a church member.

Keep in mind that metal cans are not re-useable. For commercial purposes the metal cans make sense. They are not wanting to re-use cans, metals cans are lighter and easier to ship to stores and for them the cost of a sealer is minor.
