Raw Honey Nutrition

Health Benefits of Raw Unprocessed Honey

I am sold on the value of Honey Nutrition.  I am so blessed that I found a source to buy bulk raw honey direct from a local vendor.  I buy it several gallons at a time.  Check your area and see if there is a beekeeper who could sell directly to you.  Call the health food stores, they may know of a source. Of course they probably sell it themselves.

If you are trying to lower your processed foods intake raw or organic honey makes a great sugar substitute.  Honey can be safely used in canning and pickling.

I am pleased that Jan from Health Benefits of Honey has agreed to share her knowledge on types of honey and honey nutrition to us.

Here is Jan's article on the health benefits and honey nutrition.

The Health Benefits of Raw Honey

A particularly useful way to use your raw honey is to substitute honey for sugar or sugar substitutes in home canning recipes. I have found your website a great source of information Sharon and have included this as a link for my readers who will just love this unique way of enjoying their raw honey.

Most people buy cough, cold and flu remedies from their local drugstore or chemist and strangely most of these are products containing honey and often lemon in the ingredients.

Rather silly really, they know these are supposed to be good for them however; they are very often wasting their money. Warm water with raw honey and fresh lemon juice is far more effective.

Honey nutrition is truly amazing; it's such a shame that over the years it has become almost forgotten with the introduction of sugar and sugar substitutes.

Honey is not just for sweetening foods and drinks, it is actually a nutrition packed source of food and an ancient form of medicine which has been proved by scientists to be very beneficial to our health.

Athletes, some top athletes swear by the use of honey and water to stimulate and boost their sporting performances. They understand honey nutrition and will do their utmost to avoid drinking chemical sports drinks.

There are many pretty jars or cans of honey in shops looking pretty on shop shelves.  These pretty jars are often not real, pure honey; they have been processed and blended with plenty of sugar or corn syrup.  These may cause us more harm than good.  The value of honey nutrition is much higher.

The Best Honey to Buy is Raw Honey

The best honey to buy is raw honey from your local beekeeper or local farmers markets. Raw honey, especially local raw honey, because of the pollen spores it contains, can prevent our hay fever symptoms. It actually de-sensitizes us to the pollen spores blowing around.

If you buy organic honey you should really check the labels out. It is best not to buy anything that states it has been blended with other ingredients. There are always going to be some unscrupulous manufacturers, however they are quite easy to spot.

Organic honey farmers can only label and sell their honey if their bees have not been subjected to any kind of pollution. There are very strict guidelines that must be adhered to.

Is Raw Honey Good For You?

Raw honey contains those all important anti-oxidants needed in our daily diets; they mop up all those free radicals which are so harmful to our health. This makes a combination of these excellent food sources a fantastic way to eat healthily.

In fact honey contains far more anti-oxidants than some fruits and vegetables and every vitamin and mineral including water we need to sustain life. Eating raw honey also stimulates B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocytes making them multiply.

A good honey has all the enzymes which help to ensure our foods are digested properly keeping our immune systems working properly plus it is really helpful for irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis and even when trying to lose weight.

Your skin will benefit from raw honey too, this is perhaps one of the most understated acne cures and is wonderful for healing and tightening the skin because it heals, protects and moisturizes.

Is Raw Honey Useful as Medicinal Honey?

Hippocrates cured most of his patients with honey. He dedicated most of his life healing sickly children who thrived on the raw honey nutrition they were given by him. He was the writer of the Hippocratic Oath that every modern day doctor still abides by.

Perhaps the most famous modern doctor today, who is mainly responsible for researching the benefits of honey, is Dr Peter Molam. A very clever scientist who works at the Waikato Honey Research Unit in New Zealand. Dr Molam has spent more than thirty years researching and proving the benefits of honey as a healer.

We must also give credit to Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem who have proved that taking two to three ounces of healing honey a day wipes out the toughest to treat stomach ulcers. Honey helps stop a stomach ulcer from forming or healing one, if present. Just eat two to five teaspoons of good raw honey every day.

Honey has been proven to eliminate MRSA the dreaded flesh-eating disease which rears its head far too often. E-Coli is yet another disease that doesn’t stand a chance once honey gets a grip.

Hospitals today use Medi-Honey; these are honey based gauze dressings. They are applied to all kinds of skin infections such as severe nappy rash on babies, bedsores and for victims of severe burns with spectacular results.

In fact honey heals these infections faster than any chemical medications (proven scientifically). Even after major operations honey is one the preferred dressing in today’s hospitals.

Apart from being sweet and tasting nice, honey cures most bacterial ailments due to its ability to eat away at and destroy the bad bacteria both on our insides and our outsides.

Stomach ulcers are caused by these bacteria, not as always believed stress! Honey does all this without destroying the good bacteria we need in our digestive systems and on our skin, to promote healing.

Is there a more versatile food source than raw honey? Honey can be used in cooking and baking for some fantastic recipes, can be mixed with fruits to naturally sweeten a delicious smoothie, spread on toast and eaten straight from the can or the jar.

Honey can be stored forever, literally. There is no use by date, just store it at room temperature in your kitchen or bathroom cabinet or maybe both and give thanks to the amazing little honey bee for their gift of life to us.

Apart from the  all the wonderful benefits of the delicious honey they make they are of course responsible for the pollination of 80% of our food crops. So the next time you are canning your favorite fruits remember this, without the honey bee our lives would be very different indeed.
